NYC CHSAA Basketball Finals

In my last post on Wednesday I mentioned my basketball team, St Joseph by-the-Sea H.S. was getting ready for the NYC Catholic High School semi-final playoff game. This game was against Monsignor Farrell H.S., coached by Dan Fisher, a very good friend of mine and a Main Street beats Wall Street reader. Dan’s team had won the last 4 city championships in the A division. He’s a great coach and he beat me in our 2 league contest this year.

Our semi-final was played this past Thursday. I’m happy to report that my St Joe’s Vikings beat Dan’s Farrell Lions in a tough, hard fought battle.

We built a 10 point lead in the 1st half and carried it into halftime. In the 2nd half we held the lead through the 3rd quarter but Farrell fought back and took a small lead late in the 4 quarter. My team kept fighting and refused to accept a 3 loss from the number 1 seed. My St Joe’s team won by 4 points to move into the city finals to face a very tough Fordham Prep H.S. team from the Bronx.

I would like to congratulate Dan Fisher and his Monsignor Farrell Lions on a great season. I know he has many years of success ahead of him.

Today we had our last practice of the season, and our last film session. For the last 2 weeks, because of single elimination, I’ve been saying to my team, “let’s not make this our last practice.” And our last practice wasn’t forced on us because we were winning. Win or lose, tomorrow is the last game of the season. It’s nice knowing it’s your last practice because you made it to the end. No one forced our “last practice” to be our last by beating us. There’s not too many teams who win the last game of the year, tomorrow we have a chance to do that. Let’s hope that’s the case, my kids deserve it!

My St Joe’s team will play Fordham Prep H.S. for the NYC Catholic High School Athletic Association A Championship tomorrow, Sunday, Feb 24th at 1pm. The NYC CHSAA is a very tough basketball league. One of the toughest in the world. Many major college and NBA players came from out league and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Wish us luck!

Steve
